I Ching: Book of Changes

Changing Lines Explained: Your Second Hexagram

Changing lines make a reading dynamic. When a throw yields 9 (old yang) or 6 (old yin), that line is at the end of its cycle and flips: yang becomes yin, yin becomes yang.

The hexagram you first built is the present situation. Flip the changing lines and you get a second hexagram - the relating hexagram - showing where things are heading.

With one changing line, that line is the heart of the reading. With several, the tension between the two hexagrams is the message. With none, read the cast hexagram as stable and complete.

Track changing lines over time - the same question months apart - and patterns begin to show.
